Any recent visitors to the farm may’ve noticed a few extra feathered friends strutting around; nine roosters to be exact!
So here’s the backstory…
We recently stumbled across an ad for a flock of approximately 50 chickens needing a new home. We answered the ad immediately, as we wished to expand our flock over the coming year; however, with the current avian flu epidemic we’ve been unable to obtain chickens from our regular hatchery. The past owner required that anyone interested in purchasing the flock, needed to take all of the chickens, including the roosters. We agreed to these terms, although we really had no need for a rooster. When we got home and started unloading the crates of chickens, we discovered nine roosters in the bunch! We put the roosters in a temporary holding pen for the night, and since we don’t fertilizer our eggs, we contemplated what to do with the group of bachelors. To our surprise, we awoke in the morning to a nostalgic cock-a-doodle-do, followed by eight other echoing crows. The roosters had broke free from their pen in the middle of the night! With no time to wrangle the roosters before church, we left them to roam the yard. By the end of the day, we had grown quite fond of seeing the roosters wandering around. They decided to roost for the evening in a maple tree in the backyard, and we decided to let them live out the remainder of their days, roaming free.
And that’s the story on how nine friendly roosters joined our farm.
